I have a new to me '80 320i that died on me this weekend. 5 miles into a trip it started running badly, then the wipers went into this odd slow death spasm and then the car died. I had it towed back to my parent's place and rolled it into the garage. A couple hours later it still would not start (just a weak partial crank) I checked for obvious things that I might have bumped/unplugged while working on it this weekend and didn't find anything. I then removed and reinstalled the battery clamps to check for corrosion. The battery is fairly new and they looked fine but after that it started up and ran normally. Now I have no idea what is wrong since I don't believe that the terminals were corroded enough for that to be the problem that would just go away.

Any ideas or common failure modes I should look into. I need to fix something before I can drive it again so I at least think the problem has been fixed.
