If your starter gives a 'growl' when you release the key after starting it is a simple repair.

I don't recommend disconnecting the battery but instead find rubber boots you can slip over the electrical connections after you remove them. If you want extra security wrap the handles of the ratchets and wrenches you use in black electrical tape.
The starter is located on the passenger side and is bolted to the transmission with two E12 bolts.
Disconnect the starter's electrical connections. Cover with boots or black tape.
Unbolt the two starter bolts from the back. For the top bolt you will need a universal (wobble) and about 1/2 meter or 24 inches worth of extensions on your 3/8 ratchet.
Once these bolts are removed you may need to give the starter a good 'rap' to knock it loose.

Place the starter on your bench nose down. Remove the two 7 mm bolts holding it together and remove the nut holding the electrical strap at the solenoid.
Pull the starter off. Remove the yellowish plastic cover. Inside are the planetary gears. Glob some quality grease in here over the planetary and ring gears.

You're done.
Reassemble and install the starter and you will get no more noise and a starter that will last for years to come.

I don't know the same things that you don't know.
